Unknown Benefits of V Notch Ball Valve

A member of the quarter-turn valve family, ball valves provide reliable sealing and are ideal for gas applications requiring tight shutoff. Due to the potential for constant wear on the seats, they are not ideal for throttle applications. It is usually made of steel, but it is also possible to find nickel-plated versions that are more durable. This valve is also known as V Notch Ball Valve.

Ball valve types

Most ball valves are two-way, allowing linear flow from inlet to outlet. Three-way and four-way ball valves allow flow to direct in multiple directions, including 90 degrees. There are four main types of body styles: fully welded, three-piece (side or end entry), split-body, and top entry. All types of valves work the same way. For ball valves, there are three basic types of bore: full port, reduced port (standard port), and v-port.

What are V-Port Ball valves?

V-Port Ball Valves have a ‘V’ shaped seat or a ‘V’ shaped ball. It allows the orifice to open and close in a more control manner with a more linear flow characteristic. Because the flow velocities need to be in control depending on the application, this type of valve is also refer as a control valve.

How do V-Port Ball valves work?

When v-port valves are close, and opening begins, the small end of the valve opens first. This permits stable flow control during this stage. The design generally calls for a more robust valve, since high fluid velocity might damage a standard valve. While a control valve, v-port valves are not considered as accurate as globe valves, pressure regulating valves, balancing valves, or needle valves.

Applications using V Port Ball valves?

There are many applications and markets for ball valves. Transmission and storage, gas processing, and industrial are examples. Ball valves with V-Ports are also commonly used in water treatment, food processing, acid transfer, agriculture, bleach chemicals, leaching acid, waste processing, and pharmaceuticals.

There are a lot of uses for ball valves, but a V-port ball valve offers the added benefit of being able to function as a control valve when necessary. The V-shaped port in the ball provides an even more accurate flow characteristic with an angle of 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, or 90 degrees, which has a huge effect on flow control. In comparison to larger and more expensive control valves, the V-ball valves are here to offer a variety of advantages in flow control applications.

Low Pressure Drop

The V-port design minimizes pressure drop across the valve by allowing the material to flow directly through the valve. In addition, V-ball valves have higher flow coefficients (Cv) compared to similar-sized control valves; this means that a smaller V-ball valve can enable comparable flows as smaller valves of comparable sizes.

Bubble Tight Shut-Off

The floating ball principle can provide a bubble-tight shut-off along with modulating flow control for V-port ball valves. The ball and seat of the valve are pushed against each other when it is closed. This provides a stronger seal. The bidirectional flow can be controlled or shut off with these devices, which is especially useful when it comes to gas systems. In comparison to comparable control valves, V-ball valves rarely require additional shut-off valves; they save the user money and simplify the system by eliminating the need for additional components.

Precise Flow Control

There are precision machined V-ball valves with 60° and 90° V openings that provide equal percent flow characteristics. The ball can be positioned anywhere between 0° and 90° in order to achieve desired flow rates as it rotates. Using smaller actuators with these valves also improves response time.

High Shut-Off Pressure

Valves with V-balls feature a quarter turn (90°) ball rotation, which enables them to operate at higher operating pressures. Consequently, smaller and lower torque actuators can be used, leading to cost reductions and higher efficiency in the user’s application.
